I walk into the room, hesitating.
I’m doing everything but the one thing I’m here to do.
The person I want to speak to is just a few feet away. But instead of walking over, I’m circling, scanning the crowd, fiddling with my drink, looking at my phone, pretending I’ve spotted someone I recognise, but I haven’t.
The moment stretches on like play-doh that you can stretch more and more without snapping, and the anxiety builds.
And then I spot a colleague. They’re standing right next to another person I want to speak to, already deep in conversation. It’s painful—like they’ve stepped into the limelight I was hoping to occupy.
This was me before I discovered what networking could really be.
I thought networking was for extroverts—the people who seem to glide effortlessly through rooms, striking up conversations and exchanging business cards with ease. Or now, bumping phones against one another to exchange details.
But here’s the truth: Introverts can be incredible networkers, too.
This programme showed me that networking isn’t just for extroverts. It’s for anyone willing to learn the skills—and embrace a new perspective.
Networking without the “ick”
When I first joined Beyond Connections, it was a revelation.
This programme has completely transformed how I approach networking. I no longer feel the “ick” of networking, and I can make requests without feeling awkward.
You know when you need something, but you haven’t reached out to someone for ages, so it feels like you shouldn’t be imposing on them, or that they’ll wonder why you haven’t been in touch?
Yeah, my brain works on OVERTIME coming up with those kinds of reasons. But less and less.
I’ve coached the first two cohorts of the programme, starting as a coach in the first and stepping into the role of head coach for the second and now the third, which starts imminently.
What I love about Beyond Connections is that it’s not just about learning how to network; it’s about creating a space where authentic connection becomes second nature.
A space for transformation
One of the things I enjoy most about the programme is the masterminds and one-to-one coaching that we offer.
The masterminds are intimate, small-group weekly sessions where participants learn, take action, and grow.
My group had mainly people who were in career transition: CEOs looking to redefine themselves moving into new industries, consultants wanting the support of a network to grow their own business, individuals working in large organisations wanting to stand out from the crowd.
Here’s what one of my mastermind participants said about me:
"You're a gift, Eric. Your peaceful, tranquil approach harbours tremendous force—Obi-Wan meets Mr Miyagi."
These lovely words were about me, but they really reflect the kind of impact all of the coaches in Beyond Connections create—a space where participants feel seen, supported, and empowered to take bold steps toward their goals.
Why I’m sharing this with you
I don’t usually promote programmes, but Beyond Connections is different.
It’s a community of people who are redefining how networking is done—people in transition, moving jobs, moving countries, redefining themselves after years of success, or simply looking to connect in a way that feels real.
If networking has ever felt awkward, uncomfortable, or just plain overwhelming, this programme might be exactly what you need.

"Obi-Wan meets Mr Miyagi" what a fantastic description of you. Also loved the play-doh analogy. Your program sounds wonderful, especially if you're facilitating.
Thanks for sharing Eric! I'm sure you are an excellent coach and facilitator for this type of program!
